All About Vacuum Coffee Makers

The great taste of coffee can be attributed not only on the quality of the beans but also in the process of brewing. Back when instant coffee and automatic drip machines were not yet invented, people used to cook their coffee beans manually, waiting patiently to achieve the right pressure of the steam in order to extract all of the rich coffee flavors and create the best coffee. Good thing that nowadays, people who want to experience that same rich taste can easily do so with the use of vacuum machines. It returns the most basic but efficient way of bringing out the coffee flavors.

What are vacuum coffee makers?

Coffee Makers

A vacuum coffee maker is a type of coffee making instrument that uses both vapor and vacuum as compared to the usual pressure steam method. It is characterized by two overlapping glass containers: one on top and the other one on the bottom, and is separated in the middle by a vacuum tube. When it was invented in 1983, the model was only used for stove top brewing but over the years, newer and automatic models were developed in order to provide users with more convenience.

How to use vacuum makers?

The mechanism of this machine is really simple. As mentioned above, the machine consists of two containers: the lower pot for the water and the upper pot for the beans. When using the maker, fill the lower container with water. The upper container has a filter at the bottom to make sure that none of the beans fall into the coffee mixture when brewing. When the machine is ready, it will be placed on top of the stove with heat high enough for the water to reach boiling point. The water then creates water vapor that expands and flows through the vacuum or siphon tube and into the upper pot. The process usually lasts for about 3 to 4 minutes before having a perfect mixture of water and coffee.

Why use vacuum coffee makers?

Many coffee enthusiasts prefer the use of vacuum makers not only because of its simple use but also due to the fact that it creates great tasting coffee. In fact, experts say that the brewing process of such makers create the richest and smoothest coffee as compared to the others. This is why in almost all coffee shops, they still use the vacuum coffee makers in create a rich tasting coffee.

Facts About Starting an Adult Daycare Home Business

There's been a recent rise in the number of Adult Daycare Home Businesses springing up everywhere around the world, what with an estimated one in four families providing care for an elderly relative today. Before you decide to jump on the group home business bandwagon, though, you need to know as much as possible. This brief guide will help.

Some questions you should ask yourself before starting an Adult Daycare home business, or any other home business for that matter, are:

Coffee Makers

What are your talents and skills? Are you looking for a home based career or just to supplement your income? Do you have space in your home for an office? Is your family willing to support you in having a business based in their home? Are you willing to put in the necessary work it takes to get a business off the ground and to sustain it once you have? Do you want to help people?

The last question is particularly important when it comes to operating and starting an Adult Daycare home business for the elderly. Because if you're just doing it for the money, you're likely to be overwhelmed by the personal interaction required for this business.

Some people are happier working all day long at a computer, not having to deal with other people face to face. Or they prefer detailing people's cars or doing their lawn care to providing personal service that demands constantly interacting with people.

Everybody's different, and that's a good thing. Just understand that even if you set up an Adult Daycare home business across town from your own home, you're going to have to deal with people on a daily basis.

If you decide that starting an Adult Daycare business for the elderly is just the type of business you're looking for, you'll have to find out what the laws and regulations are, as well as what licenses are necessary in your state. There are certain to be some, and you need to know what they are in case you have to obtain any special certifications. CPR and first aid certifications are two that most states are likely going to require you to personally have.

Another thing that you'll have to look into before you buy or rent that house that you think would be just perfect starting an Adult Day Care home business, are the area's zoning regulations. This can be a sticky situation in many places, and even if there are no zoning laws or regulations against your opening a group home business where you'd like to, you could well find yourself up against a lot of resistance. It's mandatory that you know this upfront.

You can look for another location for starting a group home business for the elderly, or you just might decide that this is not the business for you.

Funding for group home businesses is not as hard to find as you might think. The Small Business Association, as well as many banks and other financial institutions, can point you in the direction you need to go to find the money you need to purchase a home for starting a group home business.

You'll want to understand all the terms, conditions, and financial obligations. You'll also want to find out if you must use your current home as collateral. Putting your own house up as collateral may be more than you're willing to risk for any new venture.

Insurance for your elderly group home business is something you'll definitely have to have. Liability insurance is mandatory. You'll also need fire and theft insurance. If you plan to offer any type of medical assistance to the people in your elderly group home, you may even need malpractice insurance.

Other insurance requirements may also be involved. Learn everything you can about the different types of insurance coverage you'll need, and then shop around for the best prices to obtain the necessary policies you'll need for starting a group home business.

Unless you plan to live in your Adult Daycare business and do everything yourself you'll need assistants and a concierge service for senior citizens. Planning for meals, transportation to doctors, dentists, hairdressers, and events, cleaning, and activities are other things that need to be considered before starting an Adult Daycare.

You will also want someone to oversee medications and ensure that people receive and take them at the proper times.

Starting a Group Home Business for the elderly is not for everybody, but if it's for you, then you'll find it tremendously rewarding. And in huge demand. Going into the elderly group home business with your eyes open and doing your homework first will assure that your Adult Daycare Home Business is a successful one.

Temporary Staffing Agency - How to Start

The temporary staffing industry continues to expand, with yearly double-digit growth being commonplace. Companies find it convenient and cost-effective to work with a temporary staffing agency to fulfill unforeseen demand, fill short-term vacancies, and assist with changing workloads due to restructuring or mergers. Additionally, employers are enticed by the idea of "test driving" new employees to minimize risk and ensure a good match for permanent positions.

Many a job seeker has reaped great rewards from temporary staffing. Skilled but yet-inexperienced workers are able to get a foot in the door at prestigious companies, where a weak resume would have made it very difficult to be considered. Similarly, "drifters" (those who tend to rapidly drift from job to job) may be plagued by an overly-long resume. Temporary staffing services can be ideal for drifters, as they have the opportunity to work on short-term projects and move on without the negative repercussions. Retirees and college students are also very common candidates. A retired nurse may find enjoyment and extra income from a temporary medical staffing firm. A computer science major can gain valuable experience working with a technical agency.

Coffee Makers

Only a small number of personnel is required to handle recruiting and clientele. Even the largest international firms tend to function with small, mostly-independent branch offices serving specific regions. This modular structure means it is quite possible for a one-office temporary staffing agency to compete effectively with established firms.

Overall, the triple-benefit to clients, associates, and entrepreneurs has contributed to the phenomenal growth of the temporary staffing industry. Because of these advantages, it will remain an integral part of the employment process through good times and bad.

Start Up Costs and Financing Sources:

,000 to ,000

The startup and operating costs of a temporary staffing agency are much lower than many other businesses. The basic requirements are a small office with the typical supplies, a computer system with general accounting software and database software for organizing contracts, and the people skills to work with clientele and associates. It would not be impossible to start a temporary staffing agency on a shoestring budget of a few thousand dollars.

The largest business expense is payroll. It is common for associates to be paid by the agency before the agency is paid by the client. An account must be maintained with sufficient funds to cover payroll costs until bills are paid by the clients.

It is difficult - but not impossible - to get help from venture capitalists in covering part of the costs of setting up a temporary staffing agency. A well-researched, forward-looking business plan is essential.

Pricing Guidelines for Service:

Associates are paid by the hour, and the agency covers its costs by charging a premium to the amount billed to the client. The exact amount of the premium differs from case to case and can vary from 5% to 50% or more. Some associates are willing to work for less and some clients are willing to pay more, which when properly matched can result in very decent profits for the temporary staffing agency. The contract usually spells out a flat fee to be paid to the agency in the event that a client decides to permanently hire an associate.

Advertising and Marketing:

A competitive hurdle for small startups is that larger agencies already have established reputations and brand recognition. This is actually a minor obstacle because of the localized nature of the business. It is not necessary to wage a national marketing war to gain exposure for a new agency. An inexpensive and well-directed marketing campaign can quickly build a valuable reputation within the local operating region of the startup.

Essential Equipment:

An office (perhaps a home office) should be equipped with the standard office supplies and at least two telephone lines.

At least one computer system with accounting software and a database for keeping track of projects is mandatory. A printer is used for printing invoices and job listings, and a high-speed Internet connection connects the agency with online job search sites.

Many temporary staffing services have computers with tutorial software available to help associates to train their keyboarding and basic office software skills. These computers are also used to test the skills of applicants.

Income Potential:

Many billions of dollars are spent on temporary staffing services each year. A small, single-office agency can earn profits in the tens of thousands of dollars. The large, international firms rake in millions every year.

Target Market:

A temporary staffing agency is the middleman between two distinct markets: clients and associates.

It is usually not a difficult matter to reach hundreds of applicants with simple help wanted advertisements. More focus will probably be placed on connecting with client companies and convincing them that your services will help their businesses.

Certain industries seem more receptive to temporary staffing. Financial institutions and other office-centric companies are constantly seeking qualified office support staff. Factories frequently need labor for light industrial work, product assembly, and shipping and receiving tasks. Hospitals and clinics use temporary medical staffing to hire transcriptionists, certified nursing professionals, and other support staff. Increasingly, high-technology companies hire computer programmers, database specialists, and systems engineers on a temporary basis through agencies specializing in technical placements.

Tips for Success:

Develop a niche!

In larger markets, providers of temporary staffing services have found it useful to branch into niches such as temporary medical staffing, legal, financial, or technical fields. The focused nature of these agencies allows recruiters to build a pool of highly-educated, trained, and experienced associates who are able to provide the best service to clients within a particular industry.

A hospital executive would feel more comfortable contracting nurses from an agency dedicated to temporary medical staffing than from a one-stop-shop that also places welders, janitors, and filing clerks. This confidence also helps associates to command better wages than they might otherwise receive through a general-service temporary staffing agency.

Automate!

Much of the work of running a temporary staffing agency can be automated by computer software. Well-designed database software can ease the process of matching qualified associates with appropriate job openings. Accounting operations can be very heavily automated (but working closely with a good accountant is still advised). With these tools in place, just two major tasks remain: finding clients and finding associates.

Use your own services!

As the business grows, it will become necessary to add staff to handle the recruitment and marketing. That should never be difficult, since typically dozens or hundreds of qualified candidates are already in contact with the agency!

Training, Skills or Experience Needed:

Recruiters are at an advantage with a background in human resources, business management, and marketing. A degree is not essential for starting the business, but the knowledge gained through a business management program is immensely helpful. People skills are important, and can be learned through experience and self study. Numerous books have been published, specifically addressing temporary staffing as a business opportunity.

Temporary Staffing Agency - How to Start

The Importance of Imaginative Play For Children

It is important that you encourage your child to be creative in their play. When children use their imaginations they can learn to play by themselves, play cooperatively with others and improve their language and cognitive abilities. When your child plays dress up and pretend games they can live out their dreams and fantasies.

You can find many different kinds of toys and games that will encourage your child to be imaginative in their play. Some of the popular items include pretend kitchens with pretend food, gardening toys, toys that allow them to pretend to clean, cash registers and other toys dealing with money, puppets, dolls and spy toys. Your child is probably right there in the kitchen with you when you are cooking meals every day. You can find a lot of toys that will allow your child to cook right along with you. The list of toys available is almost endless and includes pretend picnic sets with food and condiments, baking sets, complete tea party sets, pots and pans, complete sets of dinnerware (these usually include cups, plates, bowls and silverware) and pretend coffee makers.

Coffee Makers

They make amazing play kitchens these days that have realistic microwaves, fridges, stoves, dishwashers and more. These play kitchens often include sounds and lights to make them appear even more realistic. You can also find real ovens and microwaves that will allow your children to cook along with you. Another great toy your children would love is a pretend grocery store with a cash register so they can check out with their groceries. There are endless possibilities for kitchen pretend play.

All young children like to play dress up with their mom and dad's clothes. You can find a lot of dress up clothing kits that have clothes, accessories and more to keep your children busy for hours and hours. You can find costume specific to the interests of your children including police costumes, fireman costumes, nurse and doctor costumes, princess costumes, ballerina costumes, fairy tale costumes, animal costumes, witch costumes, waitress costumes, bus driver costumes, magician costumes, teacher costumes, secretary costumes, superhero costumes, animal trainer costumes and many many more. These costumes often come with fun accessories like wands, hats, ballet slippers, boas, capes and tights, stuffed animals, baby dolls, serving trays and food, princess tiaras and anything else you can think of. Your child and their friends will love dressing up in these costumes and acting out their very own stories.

If your child is interested in gardening and likes to help you work in the garden you can get them their own play garden tools. You can find cute child sized wheelbarrows for them in a variety of colors and patterns that will let them help you move dirt and rock with you. Kids love this kind of thing. You can also find child size toy versions of an endless list of garden tools including water cans, trowels, shovels, seeds, bulbs, gardening clothes, gloves, rakes, and almost anything else you can think of. If your children are old enough and want to grow their own garden you can find garden kits with seeds, dirt and planters that allow them to grow and tend their own miniature garden.

That would be both fun and educational. When your kids are little they will love to help you clean up around the house. This won't last long though so enjoy it while you can. There are a lot of different housekeeping toys out there including toy brooms, mops and vacuums, toy cleaning products, toy irons and ironing boards, toy sewing machines and even cute toy washers and dryers. It can be both fun and educational for your children to play with money by using cash registers or pretend ATM's. This is a good way for them to get an understanding of how to use money. Some of the toy cash registers available let children scan items, pay with cash or a pretend credit card, give change back, and even more. These toys will help your children improve their small motor skills and learn about money, math and shopping.

Another fun kind of pretend play for children is pretending to be spies. You'll be amazed at the variety of realistic and working spy toys out there. Some of the things you can find including listening devices so the children can overhear conversations in the next room, cameras you wear on your wrist or can fit in your pocket, spy glasses for seeing what is going on far away, motion sensors that actually work and radios that let them stay in contact even if they are not in the same place. Children can have hours of fun playing spy games with these toys and will be exposed to electronics which is educational and can lead to a future interest in electronics as they get older. Play tools are another popular item that allow children to use their imagination and be like their mom or dad.

There are many pretend tool sets for children that include all the tools their mom or dad have like saws, hammers, wrenches, drills and levels. There are also cute tool benches where the children can pretend to build and fix things with all their play tools. There are also lawn and garden tools for children to be like mom and dad as well. Your child can pretend to mow the lawn, blow the leaves away, trim the hedges, cut down trees, carry rock and dirt around in their wheelbarrows and even more.

There is even pretend safety gear so they can do this all safely. Puppets are a fun way for children to use their imaginations and make up stories to act out. Children love playing with puppets. Puppets come in many different forms including finger puppets, hand puppets, bath tub puppets, marionettes with strings and a few others as well. You can also find accessories like clothes for puppets and puppet theaters so your children can put on a show for you. Puppets come in every design you can imagine including dogs, cats, lions, tigers, frogs, bears, fish, and many more animals.

Other puppets can be found that are famous people, babies, small children, moms and dads, teachers, policeman and fireman, and fairy tale characters. The possibilities are endless. Puppet theaters can be found to fit in any home and can include small theaters that fit on the table, ones that fit in a doorway, floor ones that are a little larger and more. You and your children will have a great time playing with puppets together. Children need to express themselves through playing and be encouraged to use their imaginations. They love pretending to be other people that they know or have seen in their lives. It is important to have a variety of toys and accessories in your home so your children can act out stories and scenes from their imaginations.

How to Make Restaurant Quality Coffee At Home

Have you ever wondered how restaurants get their coffee to taste so good?

First of all, restaurants are in the business of pampering you so they devote much more time to the perfection of a good cup of coffee. Sometimes I'll remember a restaurant just because of their excellent coffee.

Coffee Makers

So what are their secrets and how can you duplicate this recipe at home? It may surprise you to find out that the French Press brewing method could be the secret in achieving that restaurant quality taste.

Most fine restaurants use a press pot, also known as the French Press, which produces an extremely rich cup of coffee.

Press pot coffee is coffee steeped for 3-4 minutes between 195 to 205 degrees F. It produces a thicker and much richer taste than an auto-drip machine can produce.

A disadvantage of the French Press is it may leave trace amounts of coffee sediment. But the rich taste more than makes up for the small amount of sediment at the bottom of your cup.

So first, start off with a quality medium roast coffee, which is what most restaurants use. I can give you a couple of good recommendations.

Seattle's Best Breakfast Blend, Starbucks Breakfast Blend or Starbucks Sulawesi Coffee is 3 excellent choices. These are full-bodied coffees yet very smooth tasting. They are some of our best sellers at PerfectCoffees.com and work well for French Press brewing.

You want to grind the coffee slightly larger than you would for drip coffee. Too fine of a grind will produce a bitter cup of coffee. If your grind is too coarse, the coffee will taste weak. A quality grinder is the best thing you can do to improve the taste of French press coffee.

Remove the plunger from the press pot and put 1 rounded tablespoon of coarse ground coffee per each 6oz. of water into the pot. You can adjust this to your own taste.

Coffee is 99% water so use clean filtered or bottled water free from chlorine and other minerals that affect the taste of coffee.

Boil the water and remove it from the heat for five minutes before you pour it. This will give you the 195 to 205 degree water that is ideal to brew with. Now pour the 195 to 205 degree water over the ground coffee.

Stir the coffee to get total saturation of the grounds then place the plunger on top of the pot and let the coffee steep for 3 to 4 minutes.

Depress the plunger slowly to push the grounds to the bottom of the pot.

Serve all the coffee in the pot after the 3 to 4 minutes of steeping. Otherwise the coffee will keep getting stronger.

If you have any left, you can always transfer it to a clean, preheated air pot or a stainless steel Thermos. This will keep the coffee hot about an hour without hurting the flavor.

The French press brewing method definitely takes more time but gives us the result we are looking for. Restaurant quality coffee in the comfort of your own home.

How to Start a Pet Transportation Business

Pet Transportation Services are needed as the number of pets in the U.S. has grown tremendously over the past few decades. According to the U.S. Pet ownership and Demographics sourcebook, there are an estimated 60 million dogs and 70 million cats in American homes today. Apart from that, households which own pets have been recorded to spend 36% more in 2001 as compared to 1996. With this, owning a business that caters to the pet market, including a pet transportation service has lots of potential for healthy growth.

This is due to the fact that many Americans move around the country yearly and thus would require pet transportation services to move their pets as well. On a smaller scale, pet transportation services can also cater for local residents who require these services to transport their pets to and from the vet, within a local area or even to the crematorium for pets which have died.

Start Up Costs and Financing Sources:

Starting a pet transportation business really depends on the scale that you want your business to be. If you want to start on a smaller scale, all you really need is probably a pickup truck that has been modified to be safe and suitable for the transport of animals. Of course, you will need to set up an office or operate from your home with just a telephone, email and a fax machine. All of these will cost you less than ,000.

On a larger scale, especially when you are considering cross border transportation, you will probably need to invest on a larger truck that can accommodate a few pets at the same time. Apart from that, the insides of the truck will need to be made suitable, safe and clean for pets, with adequate ventilation and cleaning facilities. In order to make this business viable, you may need to quickly expand your business to include sales agent offices in various locations. This way, you can build up business volume in order to increase profitability. All of these may cost you anywhere from 0,000 to 0,000 in initial start up costs.

Financing can be obtained from investors who may be interested in the potentials of such a business. Other than that, lending institutions such as banks can be approached to obtain a loan for the business. As with any business start-up, an impressive business plan must be developed for potential investors and financiers, indicating the potential growth as well as the estimated annual costs and revenue of the business.

Pricing Guidelines for Service:

The pricing strategy for a pet transportation service business fluctuates based on the fixed and variable cost of the business, as well as the nature of the service provided. Local transportation services may start with a minimum charge of to for the first 20 miles and an additional for every 10 miles after that.

As for interstate transportation or transportation between cities, the distance between the origin and the destination will be the major price determinant. With this, prices may range from 0 and up, depending also on the size of the animal and the pet carrier.

Advertising and Marketing:

As you are targeting pet owners, the best marketing approach would to advertise in locations where pet owners would go. Reading material for pet owners as well as events that are attended by the same target group. Placing brochures within pet stores and probably awarding pet stores with commissions for every customer they recommend to you would be a good idea. Advertising in pet magazines or getting a write up on your services would be helpful. Of course, classified ads in the Yellow pages are a must in order to make it easy for customers to locate you.

Other channels of promotion would be participation as a vendor in dog shows or exhibitions. Doing this will help increase awareness on the existence of the business. Additionally, working with associations such as the American Kennel Association would create and improve visibility to pet breeders and pet store owners. Especially when you participate in events organized by these associations.

Launching a website and allowing potential customers to get instant price estimates from your website would also be a great idea.

Essential Equipment

This business requires a fair amount of equipment, in which the most important would be the vehicle that is used to transport the animals. Apart from that, other equipment such as crates, kennels and carriers may be required as some customers do not have these items with them. The size and usage of these crates must be according to the guidelines set by the Independent Pet and Animal Transport Association (IPATA).

Handlers and drivers will need to be employed to care for the animals while they are in transit. Other equipment required would be built-in sinks within the vehicle to allow for easy cleaning and water refills.

Recommended training, experience, or needed skills:

There is no extensive training required for a pet transportation service business. However, good and responsible drivers and animal handlers need to be engaged. It would be best if you have a background and experience in handling animals during travel so you can train your staff and ensure that they are handling animals in the correct manner. Apart from that, your staff must also know what to do if they encounter problems during the journey, and should also be equipped with the latest kennel and vet location information in case of emergencies.

Apart from that, the business owner must be well informed on all legal requirements pertaining to pet transportation. For example, there are IPATA guidelines on the size of crates and wire crates that are required by law. Moreover, all pets must be accompanied by an inter-state travel certificate that has been certified by a veterinarian.

Income potential:

The income potential of this business is dependent on how large the business grows to. A larger business with multiple offices and destinations will be able to sustain a higher sales volume. With this, the pet transportation business will be able to generate at least a six- figure income each year.

Target market:

Pet owners, pet stores and animal breeders.

Success tips:

A pet transportation business requires investment and a passion for welfare of animals in order for it to be successful. As it is also a niche market, lots of marketing and advertising need to be invested into the business in order to create the awareness of the services.

Caramel Stains

Caramel can be fresh and sticky on the clothing, or even dried up if you didn't notice it or forgot about it. Read below in order to learn how to remove fresh caramel stains and also dried up caramel stains.

First we will explain how to remove caramel stains when they are fresh. Make sure you treat it as soon as possible. Use a dull knife or any other non-sharp object to scrape off the excess caramel.

Coffee Makers

Next, rinse the stained area with cold water. Once you rinse with cold water, then rub some liquid detergent onto the spot. Let this sit for about five minutes. After the five minutes, then rinse hot water through the back of the spot. Make sure this water is as hot as it can be so it will force the caramel back through the clothing. Next, you can apply a stain remover stick, gel, or spray to the spotted portion of the clothing. Easy as that, you can then stick the clothing into the washing machine and the spot should be gone!

Next, we will explain how to remove the caramel spot when it is dry. First, mix one tablespoon of water with three tablespoons of Borax. Make sure you spread this onto the area. Let the piece of clothing sit for about fifteen to twenty minutes before doing anything else to it. Rinse thoroughly once the fifteen to twenty minutes are up. Next, rub some liquid detergent onto it. Let sit for about five minutes. After five minutes, rinse with hot water. Lastly, you can apply a stain remover stick, gel, or spray to the clothing to completely remove the mark before washing. Then, stick the clothing into the washing machine and make sure it is completely gone before putting it into the dryer.

What is the Difference Between Plasma TV, LCD TV and LED TV?

Over the past decade home entertainment technology has really taken some huge leaps forward. Today, the task of buying a new TV is not just a matter of picking your favourite brand or buying the largest size you can afford. There seem to be more options than ever, and this has certainly led to a lot of confusion among consumers. With that in mind, what exactly are the main differences between the different types of TV, and which is the best?

Plasma TVs are one of the older types of flat screen. They are relatively cheap to produce meaning that prices are generally low for the screen size, which led to plasma becoming a popular choice with consumers who wanted to get the largest screen for their money. These TVs use a gas, which then turns into plasma when an electronic current is passed through it; the plasma then emits the light to create the pictures. This results in a high quality, realistic picture that doesn't suffer from motion blur. It also offers a particularly wide viewing angle.

Coffee Makers

However, plasma screens do tend to only have a lifespan of about 10-15 years and do use a relatively high amount of energy, which is now frowned upon as many consumers are trying to become more environmentally friendly. Plasma screens are also quite thick, and are very heavy for their size, so they can be awkward to move. The screen is also fairly susceptible to glare, especially in bright rooms.

LCD TVs can trace their roots back to computer monitors and were first introduced at around the same time as plasma TVs. These TVs use the same basic technology as your pocket calculator screen and are backlit with florescent light. They have a much longer lifespan than plasma screens, something in the region of 30+ years, and also use much less power. Traditionally LCD prices were higher than plasma, but as new manufacturing techniques have evolved the prices are now rapidly falling.

While LCD TVs are available in a wide range of sizes, they do offer the worst performance of all the flat screens though, not only do they have the lowest contrast level but they also have a slow refresh rate meaning that motion blur often occurs. The viewing angle is also much narrower than that of plasma TVs, which means that it can be difficult to find a location that offers a good view for everyone, especially in smaller rooms.

LED TVs are actually the next generation of LCD screens, as they are based on a similar technology but use LED backlighting instead of the florescent backlighting found in traditional LCD screens. The new backlighting technology means that they are able to deliver a much more dynamic picture quality, they also use significantly less power than even the most efficient LCD TVs. LED screens can be made to be extremely thin, so they offer consumers the ability to place the TV practically anywhere - indeed it is now commonplace to see TVs fastened to the wall in order to save floor space.

As this is still a relatively new development, LED screens do tend to be more expensive than their LCD counterparts. However as LED TVs become more widespread the cost of production is expected to drop significantly, which will be reflected through dramatically lower prices in-store. Having said that, LED technology is considered to be the most reliable of all the flat screen formats so many people don't mind paying a little bit more.

The world of home entertainment can certainly be a confusing place, especially as new advances in technology seem to come along on an almost monthly basis. Hopefully this article has shed some light on the current generation of flat screen TVs, so at least you can stand a fighting chance the next time you venture into the home entertainment section of the electronics store.

The Quest for a Perfect Cup of Coffee

It is generally agreed that there are four basic elements critical to the perfect cup:

Water and Coffee Filters
Water & Coffee Filters

Element 1. Water:
Coffee is 98% water. Often overlooked, the quality of the water is as important as the quality of the coffee. A good rule of thumb is that if your water doesn’t taste good from the tap, it won’t taste any better in your coffee. That’s why Cuisinart has added a water filter to the Brew Central coffeemaker. The charcoal water filter removes chlorine, bad tastes and odors, for the purest cup of coffee every time.

Element 2. Coffee:
While the bulk of the liquid is water, all of the flavor should be from the coffee. To achieve the same great quality of coffee you receive at a coffee bar, you need to use the same quality beans. Buy the beans fresh and whole, only about a two weeks’ supply at a time for maximum freshness. Once the coffee bean is broken, its flavor degrades very quickly. If it is not practical to buy small supplies, we recommend you separate larger amounts of beans into one to two week portions immediately after purchase, and freeze them in airtight containers. The best way to maximize freshness is to minimize exposure to air, light and moisture. So, once removed from the freezer, beans should be maintained in a sealed container at room temperature, since damaging condensation occurs every time the beans are removed from the freezer or refrigerator. Note that some coffee experts advise against freezing dark-roast beans, because freezing can cause the oils to coagulate. Other experts disagree. We suggest you experiment and decide yourself.

The Perfect Cup of Coffee
The Perfect Cup of Coffee

Element 3. Grind:
The grind of the coffee is critical for proper flavor extraction. If the grind is too fine, over extraction and bitterness will result. Too fine a grind may also clog the filter. If the grind is too coarse, the water will pass through too quickly and the desired flavors will not be extracted. A medium-fine grind is recommended.

Element 4. Proportion:
The cups on the Cuisinart coffeemaker measure 5 ounces. Add the amount of ground coffee that corresponds to the number of cups being brewed. Many coffee bars and the Specialty Coffee Association of America recommend adding 2 rounded tablespoons of coffee per 6 ounces of water. Some coffee manufactures recommend using 1 tablespoon per cup. Cuisinart recommends using 1 tablespoon of ground coffee per cup, but use more or less to suit your taste. Note: the maximum capacity for ground coffee is 15 tablespoons for the 12-cup coffeemaker. Exceeding this amount may cause overflow if the coffee is too finely ground.

Features and Benefits

    DCC-1200 Controls
    LCD & Controls
  1. Reservoir Cover: Flips back for easy filling.
  2. Water Reservoir: When filling the coffeemaker with water, refer to the carafe height markings and fill to the desired number of cups. Be sure to add a small amount of extra water to account for the amount of water lost in wetting the grounds and lost as steam during the brewing process.
  3. Showerhead: Distributes water evenly over coffee, reducing temperature loss as water passes through grounds.
  4. Water Filter: Charcoal water filter eliminates chlorine, calcium and bad tastes or odors from tap water. Cuisinart recommends changing the water filter every 60 days or 60 uses ‒ or more often if you have hard water.
  5. Filter Basket: Holds a #4 paper filter or a permanent filter.
  6. LCD Digital Clock: Displays the time of day and set time for automatic functions.
  7. Function Knob and Flip Switch: Used to initiate programming of automatic functions.
  8. The Auto On feature is used to program the start time of the brew cycle. The Auto On can be set for any time, day or night. The PM indicator is displayed on the LCD for nighttime program times. The Auto Off feature is used to shut off the coffeemaker at a preset time, anywhere from 0 to 4 hours. Note: To program the coffeemaker to shut off automatically, read the instructions included in the Instruction Manual under 'To program the Variable Auto Off'
    1. Heater Plate Control Knob: For controlling the temperature of the coffee after brewing. There are three temperature settings high, medium and low.
    2. 1-4 Cup Setting: The 1-4 cup setting button is used when you make small amounts of coffee. Normal coffeemakers will produce a colder batch of coffee when smaller amounts are made, because the heater doesn’t have enough time to properly ‘warm up’ to heat a small amount. The 1-4 setting basically ‘double heats’ the water, making your smaller amounts as piping hot as a full pot would be. To use simply press the 1-4 button on the control panel after turning on the unit.
    3. Retro-style flip switch is used to turn your coffeemaker on and off and works in tandem with the function knob.
  9. Clean Setting: Tells you when it’s time to clean your coffeemaker. Remove built-up calcification from the water reservoir, to help extend the life of your coffeemaker.
  10. Brew Pause: Stops flow of coffee from basket when carafe is removed (30 seconds max) from the heater plate, so a cup can be poured in mid-brew. Since the flavor extraction rate varies during the brew cycle, we recommend allowing the brewing cycle to finish before pouring the coffee. The coffee brewed at the beginning of the cycle has a flavor profile which is very different from the flavor at the end of the cycle. Once the coffee has finished brewing, stir it before serving to blend the flavors. The coffee at the bottom of the carafe will be somewhat stronger than the coffee at the top.
  11. Carafe: The easy pour, no drip glass carafe has an ergonomic handle and brewed coffee markings for two to twelve cups.
  12. Heating Plate: Scratch resistant with black, nonstick coating.
  13. Ready Tone: Signals the end of the brew cycle with five beeps (coffee will continue to stream from the filter for a few seconds after the tone).

The Perfect Cup of Coffee

Element 1: Water
Coffee is 98% water. The quality of that water is as important as the quality of your coffee. If water doesn't taste good from the tap, it won't taste good in your coffee. Cuisinart includes a charcoal water filter to remove chlorine, bad tastes and odors, for the purest coffee flavor, every time you brew.

Element 2: Coffee
While coffee is 98% water, all of the flavor comes from the beans. To achieve the same great taste you enjoy at a coffee bar, you need to use the same quality of coffee. If you choose to grind your own beans, buy them fresh and whole. Buy only about a two-week supply at a time, because once the bean is broken, its flavor degrades quickly.

Element 3: Grind
The grind is critical for proper flavor extraction. If the grind is too fine, over-extraction and bitterness will result. Too fine a grind may also clog the filter. If grind is too coarse, the water will pass through too quickly and the maximum flavor will not be extracted. When grinding your own beans, we recommend a medium-fine grind.

Element 4: Proportion
Coffee that is too strong or too weak is always a disappointment. Follow the recommended portions of ground coffee in the instructions under Brewing Coffee, and later adjust the amount to suit your taste.
